The Latin-SEQ project not only focuses on providing genetic diagnoses, advancing research, and establishing a collaborative network across LATAM; it also aims to foster local development at each participating hospital and clinical centre in the region. This initiative seeks to build a consortium of healthcare professionals specialising in neuromuscular diseases (NMD), where knowledge, continuous training, and collaboration are fundamental pillars. To this end, Latin-SEQ offers two scientific training modalities:
Scientific Sessions
Each month, Latin-SEQ organises virtual scientific sessions open to all healthcare professionals at participating centres, including neurologists, paediatric neurologists, neurophysiologists, geneticists, physiotherapists, and other specialists involved in the diagnosis and follow-up of patients with neuromuscular diseases. These sessions aim to promote continuous professional development and the sharing of clinical knowledge and experience, contributing to a stronger collaborative network.
The sessions alternate between two formats:
- Specialised Seminars:
We host guest speakers who present on key topics in NMD management, such as MRI, histopathology, genetic counselling, physiotherapy, treatments, and advancements in specific diseases. Additionally, we encourage anyone interested to share their work or areas of expertise with the Latin-SEQ consortium. - Clinical Case Discussions:
Diagnosed cases from the project are presented and analysed, allowing participants to discuss patient management, genotype-phenotype analysis, and diagnoses. This format fosters practical learning based on real experiences and contributes to the harmonisation of clinical criteria across centres.
The seminars are conducted in Spanish, with recordings later shared with subtitles in English, Portuguese, and Spanish. To attend these sessions or access recordings of past sessions, either as a project collaborator or simply as someone interested in the training programme, please contact us.

Placements
Latin-SEQ also offers professionals from collaborating centres the opportunity to undertake placements at two leading centres: the John Walton Muscular Dystrophy Research Centre (JWMDRC) in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK; and Hospital Sant Joan de Déu in Barcelona, Spain. During these placements, typically lasting a few months, professionals can gain hands-on experience, closely observe diagnostic and clinical management protocols, attend supervised clinics, and/or refine their skills in their areas of interest.
This initiative aims to provide participants with comprehensive training that they can then apply and adapt at their home centres, contributing to the development of robust local diagnostic and care capacity across the LATAM region.
